If big establishments were severely disfigured, how much more the tiny residential ones? We hope the knowledge that we are going to share here, somehow help our Kababayans to build or rebuild strong roofs that is typhoon-proofed. A typical Filipino with a limited budget should know the things to consider to typhoon-proof their roofs and prevent it from getting flown by strong winds.

The sure way to typhoon-proof roofings are the following:

  • Get it designed by a professional.

You can never go wrong hiring one. Professionals are equipped with knowledge on how to design roofs the proper way. Instead of hiring “knowledgeable” labor to just decide things based on his “experiences”. Professional Architects and Engineers can do it best and is backed up with calculations to justify their designs.

  • Get it constructed by a legit contractor.

Properly designed plans is useless if not properly constructed. That’s the reason why there are “Designed Plans” and “As-built Plans” as mandated by our law. A legitimate contractor know how to read the plan and how to put it up based on proper engineering construction techniques.

  • Have the completed work inspected by a professional.

Quality control and assurance always accompany any infrastructure construction. That’s the reason why real state developers hire a person solely for quality control and assurance. This professional patrols and ensures the quality of the building in-behalf of the owner, since, owners normally don’t have the knowledge and intellect on building and construction.

Anyhow, we understand that there will always be fellow Filipinos who wouldn’t want to hire professionals because of monetary restrictions. If the things above are still out of budget, then please ensure that your roof will be construction with the things below in mind.

  • Properly tied or anchored trusses to the roof beam

Trusses, normally should bolted or tied into the column or roof beams. Base plates in between the truss and the column is placed for proper load distribution. Anchor bolts are placed in the column and is concreted together to ensure that it is rigid and firm.

  • Properly-welded, or bolted connections

Joints of each roof members, of course, should be properly executed. For wood roofing structure, bolts or metal straps are advised instead of nails as it is considered a weak support.

  • Use non-substandard materials

In the first place, substandard material should have never existed in the market. Always patronize business supplier that sells legitimate materials so those that trades substandard will not thrive.

  • Complete roofing accessories (Sagrods, Turnbuckles, Metal Straps etc.)

Roofing accessories which contribute to its ability to withstand heavy wind loads are often overlooked. Metal straps may be needed to roof trusses and is tied to walls. Sag rod is important to restrain the movement or deflection of purlins when subjected to load, also is often not considered.

  1. My husband and I plan to get roof trusses for our house here in Melbourne to have a more substantial roof from the intense weather. As you said, roofing accessories that contribute to a roof’s ability to endure high winds are sometimes disregarded. Metal straps may be required to attach roof trusses to walls for better hold.
